Train Interval Shortened by 5~10 Minutes at Peak Hour to Relieve the Pressure from Large Passenger Flow

(Correspondent: Xu Huili; photo: Zuo Rongliang) After completing a lot of preparatory works, e.g. the renovation and expansion project for the parking lot of North Jiangyang Road and the debugging of new trains, Shanghai Metro would increase the number of trains on the North Extended Segment of Line 3 since July 31 (this Friday) for relieving the pressure from large passenger flow. The train interval on the North Extended Segment of Line 3 (South Changjiang Road ~ North Jiangyang Road) will be shortened by 5~10 minutes at morning and evening peak hours on working days.

Train Interval Shortened by 5~10 Minutes at Morning Peak Hour on Working Days on the North Extended Segment of Metro Line 3

At the beginning of this year, Shanghai Metro has completed the renovation and expansion project for the parking lot in North Jiangyang Road Station to prepare for the capacity enhancement of the North Extended Segment of Metro Line 3. After the completion of debugging of trains, now the new trains are ready for operation. Since July 31 (this Friday), more trains will be available on Line 3, and the train interval will be shortened on the North Extended Segment of Line 3 at morning and evening peak hours on working days. The train interval on the South Changjiang Road ~ North Jiangyang Road segment will be shortened to 5~10 minutes at morning peak hour on working days; the interval of trains will be adjusted to 10 minutes at evening peak hour on working days. No changes will be made on the interval on other time segments on working days and on weekends.

Metro Line 3 and Metro Line 4 Shares the Same Trains: Get Information through Various Ways

Please note that Metro Line 3 and Metro Line 4 will share the same new trains. The head of new train is painted in black, and the body of train is painted in yellow (Line 3) and purple (Line 4) respectively. The new trains will be operated on both Line 3 and Line 4 as supplement of capacity enhancement. Passengers could get information on the name of metro line and its terminal station via broadcast and screen in the station. Information will be shown on the head and side of the train and screen in the station. Passengers should confirm the name of metro line and the terminal station from the LED screen in the train or listen to in-carriage broadcast.

During the process of debugging, some passengers suggested Shanghai Metro to show the number of metro line on the side of the train instead of showing the name of terminal station. Shanghai Metro has accepted the passengers’ suggestions and made improvement on it. After the formal operation, passengers could know about whether they are taking Line 3 or Line 4 via the screen on the side of the train.

The Passengers’ Commuting Habit in South Changjiang Road Station Would Probably Change.

By shortening the interval of trains, Shanghai Metro hopes to make it more convenient for passengers to commute on the North Extended Segment of Line 3. In the future, the passengers’ commuting habit in South Changjiang Road Station would probably change. In the past, South Changjiang Road Station was a part route terminal station. Many passengers would not get on the train when full route trains enter the station. Instead, they would wait for part route trains arriving later. Since the capacity enhancement at this time, the interval of full route trains will be shortened, and passengers in South Changjiang Road Station would take longer time than before to wait for part route trains. For this reason, Shanghai Metro suggests passengers to get on the trains as soon as they arrive at the station at peak hours, and do not wait on the platform for too much time.
