Shanghai Metro Network extends to 666km and boasts of 389 Stations

Metro Line 17 and the phase 3 project of Metro Line 9 are to be put into soft operation on December 30 (Saturday), 2017, after intense construction, operation hand-over and experts’ review. At that time, Shanghai Metro Network will extend to 666km (637km metro lines and 29km maglev line) in total length, covering 389 stations (387 metro stations and 2 maglev stations), and the total number of transfer stations will reach 52.
 
Phase 3 Project of Line 9 with 9 Underground Stations to Put into Soft Operation on Dec. 30
 

The phase 3 project of Line 9 is scheduled to be put into soft operation on December 30 (Saturday). It starts from the terminal station of the phase 2 project, Middle Yanggao Road, and runs eastwards along Luoshan Overpass, Jinqiao Overpass and Jinhai Crossing. It then turns to Jinhai Road, running eastwards along A20 Highway and Pudong Canal, and ends at Caolu Station. The phase 3 project covers 13.8km and has 9 underground stations: Fangdian Road, Lantian Road (to transfer to Line 14), Tai’erzhuang Road, Jinqiao, Jinji Road, Jinhai Road (to transfer to Line 12), Gutang Road, Minlei Road, and Caolu.

The phase 3 project of Line 9 has adhered the concept of “being open and free to return to the essence” in the design of its stations. Its roof are mostly exposed to the public with simple decoration to present the original appearance of the building; the vehicle management rooms have adopted humanized design to create a lively, simple and modern work environment and avoid the dull environment in the underground office; the prefabricate track plate technique has been used for track laying, and the factory prefabrication of track roadbed has greatly improved the appearance quality of the final products and presented the features of industrialized production, site laying construction and convenient reparation. Besides, the CPIII measuring technology has been adopted to enhance the smoothness and stability of the track and make a ride more comfortable.
 
Operation Service Enhanced with 1st Trains Departing at Several Stations and Last Trains Postponed

From the soft operation of the phase 3 project of Line 9 (Middle Yanggao Road – Caolu), the terminal station of Line 9 in Pudong section will extend to Caolu. At that time, the operation routes and time of Line 9 will be adjusted. The departure time of the 1st train from Fangdian Road to Songjiang South Railway Station is 05:50 and that of the last train is 22:53; the departure time of the 1st train from Fangdian Road to Caolu is 06:26 and that of the last train is 23:52; and the departure time of the 1st train from Caolu to Songjiang South Railway Station is 05:30 and that of the last train is 22:30.
 
Besides, the operation time of Line 9 is 05:30 – 0:14 (next day) and 1st trains are to depart at several stations: the 1st trains from Caolu and Middle Yanggao Road to Songjiang South Railway Station are both at 05:30 and the time of those departing at all stations between Songjiang South Railway Station and Middle Yanggao Road (the existing section) will remain unchanged. As the whole line has been extended, the departure time of last train at each station has all been postponed. In particular, the last train departing from Songjiang South Railway Station to Pudong is postponed from 21:50 to 22:30, that departing from Middle Yanggao Road to Puxi is postponed from 22:30 to 22:55, and that departing from Middle Yanggao Road to Caolu is at 23:50. The service time of Line 9 has been extended on the whole compared with that before the opening of the phase 3 project.
 
The delayed operation scheme of Line 9 at weekends will remain the same as before: the last trains of Line 9 in delayed operation time between Sheshan and Middle Yanggao Road are the same as before, and the operation interval is about 15 to 20 minutes during the delay operation.
 
Double Train Routings for Line 9 Adopted during Morning/Evening Rush Hours on Workdays, Single Train Routing Adopted for Other Operation Hours

The double train routings for line 9 will be adopted during rush hours on mornings and evenings of workdays. One is from Songjiang South Railway Station to Middle Yanggao Road Station; the other one is from Sheshan Station to Caolu Station. As for non-rush hours on workdays, weekends and holidays, line 9 takes the single train routing, namely, from Songjiang South Railway Station to Caolu Station.
 
The Minimum Interval of Line 9 during Rush Hours of Workdays: 2 min and 13 sec

During morning rush hours on workdays, line 9 takes the operation interval of only 2 min and 13 sec from Sheshan Station to Middle Yanggao Road Station, and 3min and 20 sec for the opposite. As for metro trains from Songjiang South Railway Station to Sheshan Station, the interval time is 3min and 20 sec, and 6 min and 40 sec for the opposite. Within the section of Middle Yanggao Road Station to Caolu Station, the two-way trains’ operation intervals are both 6 min and 40 sec.
 
During evening rush hours on workdays, the two-way train’s operation intervals for the section of Sheshan Station to Middle Yanggao Road Station are both 3 min, while those for the section of Songjiang South Railway Station to Sheshan Station and that of Middle Yanggao Road Station to Caolu Station are both 6 min.
 

For non-rush hours of workdays, trains of the whole line 9 takes 5 min and 30 sec as interval; for weekends and holidays, 5 min is took as interval.
 
Soft Operation of Line 17 (13 Stations) on Dec 30
 

 

According to plan, line 17 will carry passengers for soft operation after the first train departs on December 30 (Saturday). With about 35 km for the whole length, line 17 is equipped with 13 stations totally, such as Hongqiao Railway Station (transfer to line 2 and line 10), Zhuguang Road Station, Panlong Road Station, Xuying Road Station, Xujingbeicheng Station, Middle Jiasong Road Station, Zhaoxiang Station, Huijin Road Station, Qingpu Xincheng Station, Caoying Road Station, Dianshanhu Avenue Station, Zhujiajiao Station and Oriental Land Station. Thereinto, 6 overhead stations and 7 underground stations form a fast commuter route directly linking up the downtown and west Shanghai. Moreover, echoing line 17 opening to traffic and the expanding of traffic network, the distance from Oriental Land Station on line 17 to Dishui Lake Station on line 16 counts on the longest, and the highest price is 15 yuan (the former longest distance, from Huaqiao to Dishui Lake, cost 14 yuan).
 
Hongqiao Railway Station on line 17 is the only station that provides the service of transfer to other metro lines. Through jointly-used platform storey, a transfer (for some directions) between line 2 and line 17 at Hongqiao Railway Station is allowed, while Hongqiao Railway Station of line 10 is an independent island-style platform, which needs the station hall storey to transfer to other lines.
 
Watertown Culture, Eco-friendly Tech Glamorize Line 17

 

At the beginning of planned and designed, line 17 integrated with regional water-town culture. Themed with “Scenery Watertown, Headstreams of Shanghai”, decoration and design of line 17 facilitate to build a picturesque route flavored with clear water-town features. Building line 17 is the first time to use factory-prefabricated PC standardized materials in large scale. Prefabricated PC creates changeable visional effects in a single way, staging various and colorful individualized appearances, like laying Lego blocks. In addition, walls in the metro are brushed with negative oxygen ion materials that can save energy and light, lower electric consumption of indoor air conditioners and release negative oxygen ions to improve air quality, thus supplying a more cozy environment for passengers.
 
Line 17: Multiple Humanized Improvements for Ride Quality
 

As China’s first metro owning domestically-produced signal system with complete independent intellectual property rights, line 17 is highly safe, reliable, extensible and maintainable, realizing full-automatic driving functions including automatically operating, automatically opening or closing doors, automatically returning back, automatically exiting or entering storages, self-diagnosing and self-maintaining. All this contributes to further ensuring safe operation of metro, improving efficiency of metro operation and lowering system maintenance cost.

Moreover, variable frequency air conditioners will be equipped for line 17, making the temperature controlling more stable, thus improving ride experiencing quality for passengers. Integrating with constant illumination controlling, LED lighting will join in the decoration of line 17 for adjusting lightness without limits, aiming to save more energy and make it more comfortable. In addition, with solidifying striking marks on the floor and humanized equipments like leaning support and seatbelts, regions for the disable are established, warming humanistic care from Shanghai Metro.
 
 
Operation Time of Line 17: 06:00 to 23:10
 

After the soft operation of line 17 (from Oriental Land Station to Hongqiao Railway Station) is launched, the operation time for the whole line is from 06:00 to 23:10. The departure time of the first train from Hongqiao Railway Station to Oriental Land is 06:00, while that of the last train is 22:30. The departure time of the first train from Oriental Land to Hongqiao Railway Station is 06:00, while that of the last train is 22:00.
 
Line 17: Double Train Routings Adopted in Rush Hours on Workdays, Single Train Routing in Other Operation Hours

After the soft operation of line 17 (from Oriental Land Station to Hongqiao Railway Station) is launched, the double train routings will be adopted in morning and evening rush hours on workdays. The big one is from Oriental Land to Hongqiao Railway Station; the small one is from Dianshanhu Avenue to Hongqiao Railway Station. For non-rush hours on workdays as well as weekends and holidays, only the single train routing will be adopted, namely, from Oriental Land to Hongqiao Railway Station.
 
Minimum Interval of Line 17 in Rush Hours of Workdays: 5 Min

According to the plan, the operation interval of two-way trains of line 17 between Dianshanhu Avenue and Hongqiao Railway Station is 5 minutes in morning and evening rush hours of workdays after the soft operation is launched, while that of two-way trains between Oriental Land and Dianshanhu Avenue is 10 minutes; in non-rush hours of workdays, the operation interval of the trains of the whole line 17 is 8 minutes. On weekends, the operation interval of the trains of the whole line 17 is 6 minutes.
 
A Convenient Transfer from Line 17 to Lines 2 and 10 at Hongqiao Railway Station
 

Tips: At Hongqiao Railway Station, a transfer from a train of line 2 bound for East Xujing to that of line 17 bound for Oriental Land is allowed at the same platform; a transfer from a train of line 17 at the terminal station to that of line 2 bound for Pudong International Airport is allowed at the same platform; a transfer to any other line’s train is allowed at the station hall.
 
A convenient transfer from line 17 to line 2 (in the same direction and at the same platform) and line 10 (upon going through the station hall storey) is realized at Hongqiao Railway Station (A transfer from a train of line 2 bound for East Xujing to that of line 17 bound for Oriental Land is allowed at the same platform, and a transfer from a train of line 17 at Hongqiao Railway Station, the terminal station, to that of line 2 bound for the downtown is allowed as well. Passengers getting on a train of line 2 at East Xujing need to transfer to line 17 after going through the station hall). 
 
Platforms 3 and 6 Opened at Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 on Dec. 30 for In-station Transfer
 

Tips: the station is an out-of-system transfer station, while an in-station transfer between a train of line 2 bound for Pudong International Airport and that of line 10 bound for Xinjiangwangcheng or Hangzhong Road is allowed. 
 
In order to further improve the convenience of transfer, platforms 3 and 6 will be opened at Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 on December 30 for passengers to directly transfer to trains of lines 2 and 10 bound for the downtown. Then, a train bound for Pudong International Airport and that bound for Xinjiangwancheng will open doors on both sides after arriving at Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2. The to-be-newly-opened platforms 3 and 6 will provide convenience for passengers moving in the above two directions to directly transfer at the platform instead of going out of the station. Besides, the original outside-station transfer to any other line’s train will remain unchanged.
