To enhance the reliability and stability of the signal system of Metro Line 1 which has run for over 20 years, Shanghai Metro plans to make cut-over between its new and old signal systems at the night of December 8. As a result, the delay operation of Line 1 at this Friday night (December 8) is to be canceled, and the 1st trains at the stations from Shanghai South Railway Station to Fujin Road are to be postponed on December 9. Besides, a turnover renovation is to be made at Xinzhuang Station of Line 1 from January 7 to 18, 2018, to efficiently increase the turn-back capacity of Line 1, set up a tie-line between Line 1 and 5 and to strengthen the metro-network-resource sharing capacity. And the delay operation of Line 1 is to be canceled at nights of January 12 (Friday) and 13 (Saturday) of 2018.

Signal System Overhaul of Line 1: Relay Interlocking Upgraded into Computer Interlocking

Metro Line 1 has run for 24 years since its pilot operation. As its extension lines have been constructed and put into operation in different stages, the signal interlocking systems differ at different sections. To further unify the signal interlocking mode, Shanghai Metro has started the signal overhaul project which involves Xinzhuang-Shanghai Railway Station of Line 1, covering 16 stations of 21.35km. This project mainly updates the indoor and outdoor signal systems and cables and replaces the previous relay interlocking control equipment with computer interlocking equipment, thus further enhancing the reliability and stability of the signal system.

Cut-over of New & Old Equipment of 1st Stage (Shanghai Railway Station – Shanghai South Railway Station) at Night of Dec. 8

In fact, the signal overhaul project of Line 1 officially started in March 2015, which is the 1st rail transit signal system update and renovation project in China that maintains the existing system format. The new signal facilities have been gradually installed at the off-service time of only several hours every day. What’s more, the engineering technicians have realized the quick shift between the operation in the daytime and the modulation at night through a reverse device to guarantee the normal operation of next day. In this way, both the installation and modulation of the new equipment and the normal operation of Metro Line 1 have been ensured.

At present, the equipment installation, signal testing and most other works for the new system have been completed. And the final step of “signal cut-over” is to be made soon. “Cut-over” refers to the shifting of the new and old equipment for the rail traffic control, which will realize the seamless transition of the control function and thus allow the equipment to operate normally under the new system.

Delay Operation of Line 1 to be Cancelled at Night of Dec. 8, 1st Trains at Some Stations to be Postponed on Dec. 9

The signal system is the central pivot for the safe the efficient operation and a slight move in one part of the overhaul might affect the rail system as a whole, especially the cut-over of the new and old equipment. To maximally reduce the cut-over time and the influence on normal operation, technical staffs have made repeated analysis and research and finally formulated the best scheme as follow: at the night of December 8 (Friday), 2017, the delay operation on Friday night of Line 1 is to be cancelled, and it is to be closed at the time on workdays; on the morning of next day (December 9), the 1st trains at the stations from Shanghai South Railway Station to Shanghai Railway Station of Line 1 is to postponed by about 35 minutes, and those at the stations from Shanghai Railway Station to Fujin Road is to be postponed by about 15 minutes. Passengers should notice the timetable and adjust the outing time accordingly. The signal system cut-over will not affect the trains from Fujin Road to Xinzhuang and those from Xinzhuang to Shanghai South Railway Station. And the departure time of the 1st trains of the above directions will remain the same as before.

Turnout Renovation at Xinzhuang Station of Line 1

Delay Operation of Line 1 at Nights of Jan. 12 & 13, 2018 to Be Cancelled

To efficiently enhance the turn-back capacity (the turn-around efficiency) of Line 1, set up a tie-line between Line 1 and Line 5, and strengthen the network-resource sharing capacity, a turnout renovation is to be made at Xinzhuang Station of Line 1 from January 7 to 18 of 2018. To ensure the continuous renovation, the delay operation of Line 1 on January 12 (Friday) and January 13 (Saturday) is to be cancelled and it will close at the time on workdays.

Making Plans after Pre-assessing to Guarantee Operation Order

Shortly after the implementation of the new signal system of Line 1 and the turnout renovation at Xinzhuang Station, the operation order and passengers outing might be affected due to the gradual adaptation and improvement of its stability and reliability. Therefore, Shanghai Metro has made assessment on possible risks, formulated the emergency plans and countermeasures in advance, and reinforced the cooperation and modulation of professionals, so as to guarantee the normal operation of all equipment and orderly running of trains after the using of new system and the turnout renovation. The new signal system will control the train running of Line 1 after the cut-over and turnout renovation, which will enhance its reliability, stability and turn-back capacity. It is learnt that the 2nd stage of signal cut-over on Line 1 is to be made in the latter half of 2018, which will affect its delay operation in a short period. And Shanghai Metro will release relevant information to the public in advance.
